OpenAI plans to publicly release GPT-5.6 on Thursday, July 9, after delaying the model last month at the US government’s request over national security concerns, the company said. GPT-5.6 clears Washington review

A person familiar with the matter said the US Department of Commerce approved a broad launch after additional government testing under a new oversight framework for frontier AI. OpenAI had limited access to a small group of vetted partners and shared partner details with authorities, according to the account.

OpenAI said late Tuesday it plans to release GPT-5.6 Sol alongside Terra and Luna. The company described Sol as its most advanced model, Terra as a mid-tier lower-cost option and Luna as its most cost-efficient model.

The review reflects Washington’s wider push to screen advanced AI systems before broad release. Officials have raised concerns that powerful models could be misused by military or intelligence services in China, Russia or other countries of concern. President Donald Trump signed an executive order setting a voluntary process for developers to provide “covered frontier models” to the US government for up to 30 days before release to trusted partners.

The next test comes on Thursday, July 9, when OpenAI’s launch will

show whether government clearance can coexist with rapid product cycles.
