Novo Nordisk said on Tuesday, April 7, that it has begun offering a higher-dose version of its weight-loss medicine Wegovy across the United States. The company is marketing the new 7.2-milligram option as Wegovy HD, expanding the available dosing beyond what had previously been authorized for the injectable product.
The company said the 7.2-milligram dose received approval last month through the FDA Commissioner's National Priority Review Voucher program. Until this update, the maximum authorized dose for injectable Wegovy was 2.4 mg, according to the company's announcement.
Novo Nordisk said Wegovy HD will be available through U.S. pharmacies, NovoCare Pharmacy, and selected telehealth providers. The company also outlined pricing pathways tied to how patients pay for the drug, highlighting different out-of-pocket expectations for cash-paying customers versus those using commercial insurance.
For adults paying in cash, Novo Nordisk said the monthly cost is expected to be $399. For commercially insured patients, the company said out-of-pocket costs may be as low as $25 per month when using the Wegovy savings offer.
The rollout comes after Novo Nordisk said last month that it planned a discounted subscription program for U.S. Wegovy patients who pay for the medicine themselves. The company framed that earlier plan, and the new higher-dose launch, as part of efforts to regain market share in the obesity-drug market.
Novo Nordisk pointed to intensifying competition in the sector, including from Eli Lilly. The company did not provide additional details in its announcement about how quickly the higher-dose product would reach all channels, how broad the telehealth distribution would be, or how many patients might be eligible for the lowest advertised monthly cost.
Beyond the United States, the launch is being watched by global healthcare investors and policymakers because demand for obesity medicines has become a major driver of pharmaceutical competition and pricing debates. However, Novo Nordisk's announcement focused on U.S. availability, U.S. distribution channels, and U.S. pricing programs, leaving open questions about whether similar higher-dose offerings or pricing structures will be introduced in other markets.
