Hantavirus Outbreak Leads to Deaths, Ship Quarantine A cruise ship, the MV Hondius, carrying nearly 150 passengers, has been quarantined off the coast of Praia, Cape Verde, since May 4, 2026, following a hantavirus outbreak that has resulted in three deaths. The vessel, flying a Dutch flag, is awaiting permission to proceed to the Canary Islands, Spain, a journey expected to take three to four days.
The outbreak has led to the deaths of three passengers, with another three suspected of infection awaiting evacuation. The World Health Organization (WHO) has indicated that human-to-human transmission is likely limited to close contacts, such as couples or medical caregivers, assessing the risk to the general public as low. Passengers are adhering to isolation protocols and enhanced hygiene measures.
Despite the circumstances, passengers report maintaining morale, engaging in activities such as reading and watching movies. The crew is actively disinfecting the vessel and providing updates to those onboard. The ship's operator, Oceanwide Expeditions, confirmed that additional medical supplies have been brought aboard to manage the situation.
