Kyiv apartment block hit in Russian strike

Officials said Russian air strikes on Friday injured eight people and set a fire in a nine-storey apartment building in Kyiv.

The State Emergency Service of Ukraine in the Kyiv region released video showing a large blaze and firefighters working to contain it, officials said; the location and date of the footage could not be independently verified. Ukrainian authorities said the strikes struck in the morning and caused the building fire and the reported injuries.

Officials said the attacks returned after a short pause coinciding with a visit by U.S. negotiators to Moscow and Kyiv. Government statements described the pattern as a resumption of near-constant air attacks on the capital this week, without assigning motive for the timing.

Analysts said the incident is a localized escalation that risks higher civilian harm if strikes persist. They added that renewed attacks on population centres can complicate diplomacy and place additional strain on emergency services and housing for displaced people.

Officials said emergency teams were conducting damage assessments and medical evacuations. Further updates and consolidated casualty figures are expected by September 12, the authorities said.
