KPRS officials said cheap imports are undercutting local growers and asked the central government to set an "appropriate tariff" on red gram coming from abroad and to guarantee an MSP. Officials said the request is meant to stabilise farm incomes and support planting decisions ahead of the next season.
The association framed the demand as a trade remedy rather than an export restriction, asking for a tariff level that would narrow the price gap between imported and domestic pulses. KPRS officials said they expect the measure to reduce downward pressure on farmgate prices if enacted.
Policy response will determine market effect. Officials said they expect a government reply by October 31, 2026; traders and processors will likely reassess buying and import plans once any tariff level or MSP guarantee is announced.
