Scholar John Esposito Dies at 86

John L. Esposito, a prominent scholar of Islamic studies and international affairs, died on July 15 at the age of 86. His death was confirmed by his family and Georgetown University, where he served as a professor for decades.

Born in Brooklyn in 1940, Esposito dedicated over 50 years to academic research aimed at correcting Western misconceptions regarding Islam. In 1993, he founded the Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding at Georgetown, establishing a framework for interfaith dialogue that influenced policymakers, journalists, and religious leaders globally. His 2007 study, Who Speaks for Islam? , utilized data from over 50,000 interviews across 35 countries to provide empirical analysis of Muslim public opinion.

Throughout his career, Esposito authored or edited more than 50 books and served as president of both the Middle East Studies Association of North America and the American Academy of Religion. His work gained particular prominence in the post-September 11 era, as he sought to challenge rising Islamophobia through academic rigor and public engagement. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Jeanette P. Esposito.
