Israel Accelerates West Bank Settlement Expansion
Israel has launched an intensified settlement expansion program in the West Bank, backed by increased state funding amid rising regional violence.

Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich announced a significant expansion of settlement activity in the occupied West Bank on July 6, 2026, following cabinet approval for 13 new outposts. The initiative targets strategic corridors along Route 60 and territory extending toward the Jordan Valley, aiming to consolidate Israeli control over the region.
The expansion marks a continuation of a trend that has intensified since 2022. Data from the Palestinian Forum for Israeli Studies indicates that the number of new outposts rose from an annual average of eight between 2012 and 2022 to 86 in 2025. The government allocated 75 million shekels ($20 million) to support this growth in 2024 alone.
This policy shift coincides with a documented increase in settler-related violence and infrastructure destruction. According to the Colonization and Wall Resistance Commission, 1,659 attacks by Israeli forces and settlers were recorded in May 2026, including the destruction of over 7,000 trees and the demolition of 155 Palestinian structures. Palestinian officials state that these developments effectively isolate East Jerusalem from the West Bank, further complicating the viability of a two-state solution.
