Iran claimed it downed a US MQ-1 drone near Bandar Abbas as separate accounts said five Iranian tankers were targeted, potentially raising Gulf escalation risk. The US military has not publicly confirmed any drone loss or issued an official response to the Iranian claim.
Iranian authorities said air defense forces fired a missile that struck the unmanned aircraft near Bandar Abbas. They also released video and images that they said showed the MQ-1 being targeted and brought down.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy and Aerospace Force claimed responsibility for the alleged drone operation, according to Iranian authorities. The claim remains single-sided without US confirmation, leaving the status of the aircraft and the circumstances of the reported engagement unresolved.
Separately, accounts of the confrontation said US Central Command carried out an operation in the Gulf of Oman targeting five Iranian oil tankers: Kaveez, Charminar, Horizon One, Risco and Daryan. Officials said warnings were issued to crews before the alleged strikes, allowing personnel to leave the vessels.
US authorities alleged the tankers were linked to a wider Iranian network used to generate funds for military activities.
If the tanker operation is confirmed, the immediate mechanism for market risk would run through Gulf shipping insurance, tanker availability and the perceived security of energy flows through nearby lanes.
