Chinese Steel Imports Surge into India

Chinese finished steel exports to India more than doubled in April 2026, reaching approximately 232,000 metric tons, marking the highest volume in at least two years. This surge positions China as the top exporter of finished steel to India, despite India's imposition of import tariffs on certain grades in December 2025.

The primary imports from China included hot-rolled coils and stainless steel products. While hot-rolled coils are subject to existing tariffs, stainless steel products are exempt, contributing to their increased influx. Some imports, particularly stainless steel, are reportedly being routed through countries like Vietnam, which has a free trade agreement with India, further complicating tariff enforcement. Vietnam's finished steel shipments to India increased more than fourfold to 59,000 tons in April.

This influx of cheaper Chinese steel, priced between $11 and $37 per ton less than local Indian prices for hot-rolled steel, has raised concerns among Indian steelmakers regarding market distortion and its impact on domestic investments and manufacturing competitiveness. India, the world's second-largest crude steel producer, became a net importer in April, contrasting with the previous fiscal year (2025/26) when Chinese steel exports to India fell by 39.4% to 1.5 million tons, and India was a net exporter. The rising demand for steel in India's infrastructure and automotive sectors, with finished steel consumption reaching 13 million tons in April (an 8.2% year-on-year increase), is also contributing to higher overall imports.
