IEA urges diesel releases as 400 million-barrel pledge lags
The agency wants members to prioritize distillate stocks before its October 15 board meeting.

The International Energy Agency urged members to accelerate emergency oil-stock releases pledged in March, prioritizing diesel as refined-fuel markets remain tight before its October 15 governing board meeting.
The March action covered 400 million barrels, the largest emergency release in the agency’s history. Officials said some volumes remain undelivered seven months later, leaving the agency focused on turning pledges into physical supply.
October 15 diesel decision
The agency asked members that have not completed their March commitments to speed delivery where possible. It also asked governments that have already met their pledges to assess whether extra diesel releases are needed, including the scale and timing of any additional barrels.
Officials cited renewed attacks on civilian and energy infrastructure in Saudi Arabia as a reason for immediate coordination. The pressure is concentrated in refined products rather than crude: Gulf crude exports have largely recovered, while regional shipments of diesel, gasoline and jet fuel remain around half of normal, according to market estimates cited in the material.
The G7 this month agreed to release as much as 100 million barrels of diesel and crude after the White House warned European countries over diesel exports. European Union members broadly view that package as implementing March commitments rather than adding new supply, limiting the number of fresh barrels available to ease product tightness.
If members front-load diesel volumes on October 15, distillate margins may face a cap through added prompt supply. If commitments remain vague, diesel prices are likely to stay sensitive to Saudi disruptions, refinery outages and tender details through the week of October 15.
