GLP-1 Medications Show Blood Pressure Reduction Independent of Weight Loss

GLP-1 receptor agonists, including semaglutide and tirzepatide, have demonstrated a significant reduction in blood pressure. This effect was observed both in conjunction with weight loss and independently of it.

A meta-analysis of 32 phase 3 clinical trials, involving 43,618 adults with overweight or obesity, indicated an average systolic blood pressure reduction of 5.2 mmHg. This occurred alongside an average weight loss of 10.9%.

While weight reduction accounted for 77% of the

While weight reduction accounted for 77% of the variance in blood pressure improvement, direct renal, vascular, and neurohormonal effects of GLP-1s are suggested to contribute independently. These mechanisms include increased kidney sodium excretion, improved endothelial function, and reduced arterial stiffness.

These findings suggest that obesity treatment and blood pressure management are interconnected. GLP-1 therapies may serve as a component of integrated cardiovascular risk reduction strategies.
