Dangerous Heatwave Forecast for Central and Eastern US

Weather Service reported on Sunday that a prolonged, high-intensity heatwave will impact the central and eastern United States throughout the coming week. More than 130 million residents across the southern and Great Plains states are currently under moderate to severe heat risk, with conditions expected to intensify as the system moves toward the mid-Atlantic and Great Lakes regions.

The meteorological driver is a high-pressure system, or heat dome, which is trapping dry, sinking air and suppressing rainfall. This mechanism will push temperatures into the 90s and low 100s Fahrenheit, with high humidity levels driving heat indexes as high as 115 degrees. These conditions are forecast to persist through the upcoming holiday weekend, offering minimal relief during overnight hours when temperatures may remain in the 80s.

The resulting health risks are compounded by the duration of the event, which limits the body's ability to recover from thermal stress. Simultaneously, the western United States faces severe wildfire conditions, with dry, windy weather accelerating fire spread across the Great Basin. Meteorologists anticipate that several major cities, including New York, Chicago, and Washington, D.C., will record their highest temperatures of the year during this period.
