Government paid 6.4 billion TL to electricity firms

Street-lighting contracts and budget strain

The 6.4 billion TL figure is a one-off tally for H1 2026 and will appear in public expenditure lines, officials said. The move boosts cash flow for utility companies that operate municipal lighting but shifts the immediate fiscal cost onto treasury accounts.

Analysts warned that if these transfers continue at the same pace through the year they could add to headline spending pressures and complicate fiscal planning for 2027, officials said. For energy companies the short-term effect is improved receivables; for municipalities it reduces near-term liabilities borne locally.

Authorities will publish cumulative 2026 public spending and year-end accounts by Dec 31, 2026, offering a fuller view of how recurring such transfers have become.
