Ambassador Nur Sağman, Turkey's outgoing envoy to Dakar, announced on March 11, 2026, that relations between Turkey and Senegal have been upgraded to a strategic partnership. This significant development follows intensive diplomatic efforts and reciprocal visits conducted between 2023 and 2026. A pivotal moment was the signing of a strategic relations protocol on October 31, 2024, which has deepened cooperation across various sectors, including education, economy, trade, and defense.
Ambassador Sağman highlighted that Senegal's commitment to democratic principles in West Africa, coupled with Turkey's 'win-win' approach, were crucial factors in strengthening these bilateral ties. Turkish-backed projects in Senegal, such as the construction of the Dakar airport, conference centers, and sports facilities, have significantly enhanced Turkey's positive image within the country. Furthermore, the solidarity shown by the Senegalese people and government following the devastating February 6 earthquakes solidified the 'brotherly' bond between the two nations.
Cultural diplomacy has also played a vital role in fostering this enhanced relationship. Sağman noted that cultural initiatives have strengthened interpersonal connections and positively influenced perceptions of Turkey in Senegal. This strategic engagement aligns with Turkey's broader objective of expanding its diplomatic presence and influence across the African continent.
