Google has introduced a no-cost upgrade path aimed at more than 500 million Windows 10 users whose computers cannot move to Windows 11, positioning the offer as a way to avoid security exposure as Microsoft winds down support for Windows 10.

The option is available now and centers on converting an existing Windows PC to ChromeOS Flex, a cloud-based operating system designed to run on older hardware. Google presented the move as a practical alternative for people facing a choice between buying a new device or continuing to use a system that no longer receives full support.

Under the plan, users install ChromeOS Flex onto their current machines, effectively replacing the prior operating system. To simplify setup, Google said it has partnered with Back Market to provide a ChromeOS Flex USB Kit priced at about $3 or €3, intended to help users complete the installation process.

Google framed the initiative as both a security and sustainability measure. By extending the usable life of existing PCs, the company said the approach can reduce electronic waste and lower the carbon footprint tied to manufacturing replacement hardware. Google also cited that ChromeOS uses 19% less energy than comparable systems.

The announcement comes as Windows 10 users confront a shifting support landscape. The source material states that Microsoft’s Windows 10 reached its end-of-life in October, leaving many users weighing whether to purchase new hardware or keep running an unsupported operating system. It also notes that Microsoft has a free extended support update (ESU) program for Windows 10, but that it is limited until October of the current year.

For global PC markets, the offer highlights a competing route for older devices that might otherwise be replaced, particularly in regions where hardware upgrades can be costly. At the same time, the approach depends on users being willing to switch operating systems and complete an installation process, and the longer-term support experience for converted devices is not detailed in the source material.
