The heavy rains have led to significant damage to property and infrastructure, with streets in the capital city, Nairobi, experiencing severe flooding. Local media reports depict vehicles and pedestrians navigating inundated areas. Traders in Nairobi's Makongeni and Ruai neighborhoods protested on Sunday, citing the impact of poor road conditions on their businesses.
This marks the second instance of deadly floods in Kenya within two months; similar events in March resulted in at least 37 fatalities. The East African nation is currently experiencing its seasonal March to May rain season, which typically peaks in early May. Experts attribute the exacerbation of these weather conditions to human-induced climate change, highlighting increased water extremes across African cities.
