ECB Chief Economist Sees Higher Inflation on Energy Prices
The European Central Bank will likely increase its inflation forecast in June due to sustained high energy prices.

The European Central Bank (ECB) is poised to revise its inflation projections upward next month, signaling persistent price pressures driven by elevated energy costs. Philip Lane, the ECB's Chief Economist, indicated that the central bank anticipates a further upward adjustment to its inflation forecast in June, citing the ongoing impact of geopolitical tensions on energy markets.
Inflation Outlook Deteriorates
Lane stated in an interview that oil prices are expected to remain higher for a longer duration than previously assumed by the ECB. This outlook contrasts with the bank's March projections and introduces a significant risk factor for its inflation target.
Currently, the ECB's forecast for 2026 inflation stands at 2.6%. However, external economic analyses, such as Bloomberg's latest survey of economists, predict consumer prices to increase by 2.9% this year. These figures suggest that inflation may indeed prove stickier than initially modeled.
Broader Economic Concerns Rise
Beyond the direct impact of energy prices, ECB policymakers are increasingly concerned about the potential for an energy shock to permeate the broader economy. Lane warned that indirect effects, extending beyond fuel and energy, could transform a temporary price surge into a more entrenched inflationary problem.
Such a development would represent a "major issue" for the central bank, complicating its efforts to achieve price stability. The risk of second-round effects, where rising energy costs lead to broader wage-price spirals, is a key area of focus for the ECB.
Monetary Policy Considerations
The market is anticipating a 25-basis-point increase in the ECB's deposit facility rate to 2.25% at the Governing Council's June meeting. Executive Board member Isabel Schnabel has publicly supported such a move, indicating a hawkish sentiment within the bank's leadership.
However, Lane maintained a cautious stance regarding the specific policy decisions for the upcoming meeting. While acknowledging the inflationary pressures, he refrained from commenting on the exact outcome of the monetary policy deliberations.
The central bank's next steps will be closely scrutinized as it navigates the dual challenge of curbing inflation while avoiding excessive tightening that could stifle economic growth. The updated inflation forecasts in June will provide crucial insight into the ECB's trajectory.
