Ebola Death Toll Reaches 930 in DRC

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has claimed at least 930 lives, with health officials reporting a rapid acceleration in transmission rates. As of Monday, the DRC Ministry of Health confirmed 2,344 total cases, including a single-day increase of 37 deaths recorded between Friday and Saturday.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that the current outbreak is expanding faster than any previous instance of the virus. While the 2018-2020 epidemic required 10 months to reach 2,000 cases, the current surge hit that threshold in just two months. WHO officials estimate the actual infection count may be double the official tally, as over 80 percent of new cases are emerging outside of monitored contact lists.

Containment efforts in the Ituri province are currently hindered by labor unrest, as healthcare workers at the Bunia General Hospital have initiated a strike over unpaid compensation. The virus has now spread across five DRC provinces and into neighboring Uganda, though Ugandan authorities report their domestic situation is stabilizing. The DRC government is currently managing 724 patients in isolation while attempting to consolidate regional treatment capacities.
