EasyJet Profits Decline Amid Rising Costs

EasyJet reports 70 percent profit decline

EasyJet reported a pre-tax profit of 85 million pounds for the quarter ending in June, a 70 percent decrease from the 286 million pounds recorded during the same period last year. The decline follows a 105 million pound increase in fuel costs triggered by regional instability in the Middle East, which began in late February and caused global energy prices to surge.

The financial impact is compounded by a shift in consumer behavior, as passengers increasingly delay bookings until closer to departure dates. This trend, combined with volatile fuel markets, has introduced significant uncertainty into the airline's financial outlook for the remainder of the fiscal year. The airline continues to rely on late-booking demand to sustain revenue during the peak summer season.

Simultaneously, the company faces a complex acquisition process involving competing bids from US investment firms Castlelake and Apollo Global Management. The proposed 5.7 billion pound takeover by Apollo faces potential regulatory hurdles, as European Union officials consider tightening airline ownership rules to ensure strategic autonomy. Analysts suggest the ongoing bidding war and regulatory scrutiny may distract from operational recovery efforts.
