Drone attack on Black Sea ship kills two

The cargo ship TEDY was hit by a drone attack in the Black Sea on Sept. 10, killing two crew members and wounding two others, officials said.

Azerbaijan's foreign ministry said the victims were Azerbaijani nationals and that the vessel was under way when it was struck by unmanned aerial vehicles. The ministry announced the casualty toll and injuries but gave no further operational details.

Officials said the ministry notified Azerbaijani consular services and was coordinating with maritime authorities. The ministry's statement did not identify the origin of the drones or assign responsibility for the attack.

The incident raises short-term shipping and security risks in the western Black Sea, a corridor for regional trade and energy shipments. If confirmed as an intentional attack on a commercial vessel, the event would tend to widen war-risk insurance premiums for transits in the area and prompt shipping firms to reroute or delay sailings.

Officials said investigations are under way and that authorities and ship operators will monitor for further incidents through Sept. 12. Naval and diplomatic responses over the coming 48 hours will be watched for signs of escalation or coordinated protective measures.
