DC road closures reroute drivers near museums and Mall area

DC road closures are spreading around the National Mall as the Freedom 250 Grand Prix prepares for Aug. 22–23 racing in Washington.

National Mall route takes shape

The traffic plan covers setup, race operations and breakdown for an event tied to the nation’s 250th anniversary of independence. According to traffic notices for the race, parking lanes, curb lanes and some travel lanes will be restricted even when roadways are not fully closed.

The earliest limits are already in effect and run in stages through mid-September. The most intense race-week controls are scheduled around Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Constitution Avenue NW, Independence Avenue SW and streets feeding the National Mall.

Drivers should expect narrower travel space, fewer legal parking options and changing access rules near museums, federal buildings and downtown corridors. Local deliveries and museum employee access will be allowed on some blocked segments, but through traffic will face tighter limits as race weekend approaches.

Parking bans start before race week

Emergency no-parking zones remain posted through Sept. 15 on 3rd Street from Constitution Avenue NW to Independence Avenue SW and on 7th Street from Madison Drive NW to Independence Avenue SW. Separately, 4th Street, Madison Drive and Jefferson Drive are listed for no parking and vehicle closures through Sept. 3, with limited local access.

From Aug. 1 through Sept. 3, additional emergency no-parking areas include Pennsylvania Avenue from 10th Street to 3rd Street NW, Constitution Avenue from 9th Street to Pennsylvania Avenue NW, and Independence Avenue from 7th Street to 3rd Street SW. Maryland Avenue and parts of 6th and 7th streets are also included in that earlier phase.

Overnight closures are scheduled from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. on selected dates from Aug. 1 through Aug. 12. Those include pieces of 9th Street, 7th Street, 3rd Street, Pennsylvania Avenue and Independence Avenue as crews prepare the street course.

A broader closure window begins Aug. 14 and runs through Aug. 26 on multiple streets around the Mall and Southwest Washington. The list includes Pennsylvania Avenue from 9th Street to 3rd Street NW, Constitution Avenue from 9th Street to Pennsylvania Avenue NW, 7th Street from D Street to Independence Avenue SW, Madison Drive, Jefferson Drive, 12th Street, Maryland Avenue and parts of C Street SW.

Race weekend tightens access

From Aug. 18 at 6 a.m. through Aug. 26 at 11:59 p.m., no-parking and closure zones expand again. They include sections of Pennsylvania Avenue, 10th Street, 9th Street, 8th Street, D Street, Constitution Avenue, Louisiana Avenue, Independence Avenue, C Street and Virginia Avenue.

The Aug. 21 to Aug. 23 race-weekend period brings the most concentrated controls. Beginning at 3 a.m. on Aug. 21 and continuing until 11:59 p.m. on Aug. 23, streets near Penn Quarter, Judiciary Square, L’Enfant Plaza and Southwest will see additional no-parking zones, full closures and local-only access.

Important ramps and connectors are also listed for closures, including the Exit 9 ramp from the northbound 3rd Street Tunnel to First Street NW, the inbound Case Bridge ramp to the 12th Street Expressway or tunnel, and the westbound I-395 exit to the 12th Street Expressway. Traffic using that I-395 approach will continue west toward Maine Avenue.

The practical effect is a rolling squeeze rather than a single shutdown. If the setup schedule holds, downtown travel should become progressively more constrained before race weekend; if crews finish breakdown on schedule, most post-event restrictions should lift by Sept. 3, while the last posted no-parking areas remain until Sept. 15.

Residents, museum workers, delivery drivers and visitors with parking garage access should read posted signs closely because some streets will allow local vehicles while blocking through traffic. The next key dates are Aug. 14, Aug. 18 and Aug. 21, when the footprint widens across the Mall, downtown NW and Southwest Washington.
