James Promotes Affordable Football Kit Initiatives

Former England goalkeeper David James visited Peterborough, England, on May 29, 2024, to advocate for initiatives that reduce the cost of football equipment. James, co-founder of Football Rebooted and ambassador for Goal2Grow, highlighted the financial barriers preventing participation in football, particularly for families facing economic hardship.

Football Rebooted, established in 2021, facilitates the rehoming of donated second-hand football boots, aiming to divert items from landfills and provide affordable access to equipment. The initiative currently operates with approximately 800 donation points across the country. Goal2Grow, launched in May 2023 by Peterborough-based Up The Garden Bath, sells donated football kits for £10 each, with James becoming an ambassador in March 2024.

These organizations address both economic and environmental concerns by making football more accessible and promoting the reuse of sporting goods. James's involvement underscores a broader effort to mitigate the rising costs associated with youth sports and reduce waste from discarded equipment. His appearance coincided with a FIFA World Cup 2026 celebration event in Peterborough, supported by the city council and Utilita Energy.
