CSG gains largest MDA Space stake with 9.5% holding
The Czech defence group is adding a space team as it seeks partnerships in manufacturing, acquisitions and customer access.

CSG acquired shares equal to 9.5% of MDA Space on Oct. 13, becoming the Canadian company’s largest shareholder, the Czech industrial and defence group said in a GlobeNewswire press release.
The holding gives CSG direct exposure to a sector it said could reach $1.8 trillion by 2035, compared with about $74 billion in global government space-defence spending in 2025.
MDA Space is listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange and the New York Stock Exchange. CSG described the company as one of the largest space businesses and a global supplier of advanced space technologies and services.
The investment marks a step into a market increasingly linked to defence procurement, surveillance, communications and national-security planning. CSG said defence and space are closely connected, making space a logical extension of its defence and aerospace activities.
Michal Strnad, chairman of CSG’s board, said the holding was intended to support a longer industrial push. “We want to be a long-term strategic shareholder and see significant potential for MDA Space and CSG to grow alongside each other,” he said in the press release.
CSG said possible cooperation with MDA Space could include joint investment in manufacturing or assembly facilities in Europe. The group also said the companies could work together on strategic acquisitions and on introducing CSG customer relationships to MDA Space to support international growth.
The company presented the stake as part of a broader space strategy rather than a standalone financial investment. It said the MDA Space shares are held through a dedicated subsidiary, without naming the subsidiary or disclosing the purchase price.
MDA Space Chief Executive Officer Mike Greenley said CSG’s arrival expands the company’s strategic investor base in Europe. “As countries around the world look to increase their sovereign defence and space investments, the expansion of MDA Space’s global investor network is a strategic tool for continued expansion of our business,” he said.
CSG said MDA Space has a diversified position across satellite systems, robotics and space operations, geointelligence and defence-related applications. Geointelligence refers to the use of location-based data, often from satellites and sensors, to support analysis and decision-making.
The investment follows smaller venture-capital stakes that CSG said were made through its Tech Horizons VC fund. Those investments were in SatVu in the U.K. and Atmos Space Cargo in Germany, according to the press release.
CSG also announced a dedicated space team to build expertise and develop its activities in the sector. The team includes Ladislav Stahl as head of space strategy and technology, Filip Kocián as space director for corporate development, and Cameron McKenzie as senior adviser for Canada.
Stahl previously served as a space intelligence and space security adviser within NATO Headquarters’ Intelligence Division and led the Czech Republic’s Satellite Centre, CSG said. Kocián has worked on space-sector M&A, financing, markets and strategy, while McKenzie previously held senior roles at L3Harris Technologies’ WESCAM business, CAE and the Canadian Commercial Corporation.
Stanislav Kuba, CSG’s investment director, said the group was applying “a long-term industrial perspective and strict financial discipline” to space expansion. He said building the team and investing in MDA Space give CSG internal expertise and “direct exposure to one of the world’s most sophisticated space ecosystems.”
The press release did not disclose the seller of the MDA Space shares, whether CSG will seek board representation, or whether any binding commercial agreement has been signed between the two groups. It also did not provide financial terms for any future projects, acquisitions or European facilities.
