Canada opens tariff quota for Chinese EVs

EVSearch said on July 15, 2026 that it has opened a Chinese EV Discovery Centre in Vancouver to help Canadian shoppers evaluate incoming models as trade policy shifts. The company described rising consumer interest in lower-cost electric vehicles following Ottawa's change to tariff treatment.

Canadian tariff quota 49,000

Officials said Ottawa replaced a 100% surtax on Chinese-made EVs with a standard 6.1% tariff applied to an initial annual quota of 49,000 vehicles, with a cap set to reach 70. EVSearch said the move cleared a major market-access barrier and prompted the launch to centralize make-and-model details, pricing comparisons and import guidance for Canadian buyers.

EVSearch said dealers and prospective buyers can use the centre to compare specifications, trim levels and estimated landed prices under the new tariff. The company described the resource as aimed at reducing search costs for consumers and accelerating consideration of brands that previously faced prohibitive duties.

Market participants will be watching implementation and quota-allocation rules closely; expect Ottawa to publish detailed guidance by August 31, 2026. Dealers, importers and provincial regulators will determine how quickly new models reach showrooms and how price competition evolves over the remainder of 2026.
