BTS Launches 'ARIRANG' Merchandise Blending Joseon Art

K-pop group BTS released its 2026 DALMAJUNG merchandise collection on Tuesday, integrating traditional Joseon Dynasty folk art with themes from its fifth studio album, “ARIRANG.” The collection, available at a new pop-up store at HYBE Yongsan in Seoul and online, represents the fourth DALMAJUNG series.

This launch marks the second collaboration between HYBE, BTS's agency, and Museum Foundation of Korea. Their previous partnership in 2024 introduced Korean cultural heritage through the MU:DS museum merchandise brand. The current collection features 13 products inspired by munjado, a Joseon-era folk painting style, and the lyric “heungjeukdaegil” from the album's track “Aliens.”

Traditional Art Meets Modern Pop Culture

Joseon Dynasty

The 2026 DALMAJUNG collection draws heavily on munjado, a traditional art form where decorative images are incorporated into or around Chinese characters. This artistic choice connects the merchandise to a historical period known for its rich cultural output, bridging past and present. Designers also integrated the lyric “heungjeukdaegil,” which conveys the idea that apparent misfortune can ultimately lead to great fortune. This theme aligns with traditional Korean symbols of happiness, longevity, and good fortune, aiming to evoke wishes for peaceful daily lives among consumers. Product Range and Cultural Symbolism The collection includes a diverse array of 13 items, such as a miniature desk broom, a ceramic jar, and a pollock-shaped good-luck magnet. Other products feature a mini pouch modeled after the jar and a traditional gonggi pouch containing seven playing stones, reflecting everyday cultural objects.

Designs incorporate traditional Korean symbols like cranes, deer, and clouds, which are part of the Ten Symbols of Longevity. These motifs combine with specific references to BTS and its album, including the group's name, “ARIRANG,” and the “heungjeukdaegil” lyric, creating a fusion of contemporary and historical elements.

Strategic Cultural Engagement

A HYBE IPX business division official stated the collaboration aims to connect BTS’ musical messages with Korean cultural heritage. This approach offers a new interpretation of traditional motifs, leveraging the group's global reach to promote cultural appreciation.

Choung Yong-suk, President of Museum Foundation of Korea, noted the success of the 2024 “Dalmajung” series in promoting Korean cultural heritage abroad. The continued partnership seeks to discover further opportunities where artists' brand value and cultural heritage can mutually enhance each other, according to Choung.

Market Presence and Future Outlook

The pop-up store at HYBE Yongsan will operate until October 11, providing a physical retail experience for fans. Additionally, the merchandise is available through the Weverse Shop and at Museum of Korea museum shop, ensuring broad accessibility for both domestic and international audiences.

If this strategy of blending K-pop with traditional art continues to resonate with global audiences, then HYBE could establish a new model for cultural export, potentially increasing global appreciation for Korean heritage. If, however, the novelty wears off or similar collaborations become commonplace, then the company's unique market advantage might diminish, leading to a more saturated industry landscape where cultural integration becomes a standard expectation rather than a differentiator.
