British cars fall as India trade deal starts
The India-UK trade deal cuts tariffs on British autos. Scotch and other imports await state excise clearances before consumers see price relief.

India began implementing the trade provisions with the UK on July 16, 2026, removing or cutting tariffs that applied to British-made passenger cars in the Indian market, Officials said. Automakers responded quickly: the company announced price reductions for multiple models and another manufacturer announced cuts on select lines, citing the tariff changes.
Car buyers in India will see retail discounts immediately where import duties were the binding cost component, Officials said. Reaction in broader markets is limited for now as the measures primarily affect imported luxury and premium models rather than mass-market volumes.
JLR and McLaren price moves
Jaguar Land Rover and McLaren announced price cuts for models sold in India after the tariff changes, the companies announced. The reductions apply to vehicles imported under the new tariff schedules; local production and small-car segments are unaffected by the initial measures.
Alcohol imports face a different path: state-level excise clearances remain necessary before duty cuts feed through to shelf prices, Officials said. Companies importing Scotch and Indian whiskies said high excise rates at state level will blunt the immediate consumer benefit and that they will decide case by case whether to pass duty savings to retail prices.
Expect state excise notifications and implementation guidance by July 23, 2026, which will determine the timing and scale of price changes for alcoholic imports and the pace of wider consumer pass-through.
