A fire at the Huiteng Shoes factory in Jinjiang, Fujian province, resulted in at least 28 deaths on Thursday. The blaze, which began around noon local time, prompted a large-scale emergency response involving more than 180 firefighters and 35 vehicles.
The fire originated on the ground floor of the facility, where the presence of highly flammable manufacturing materials facilitated rapid spread throughout the structure. Rescue operations remain ongoing as authorities attempt to locate individuals still trapped within the building. Communication with several victims has been lost, according to state media reports.
President Xi Jinping has ordered an immediate investigation into the cause of the accident and mandated strict accountability for those responsible for safety lapses. This incident follows a broader pattern of industrial accidents in China, where poor enforcement of safety standards remains a persistent challenge. Official data indicates that over 13,400 workplace safety accidents occurred in the first three quarters of 2024, resulting in more than 12,800 fatalities nationwide.
