AI Frenzy Fuels Asian Stock Surge

Asian Stocks Rise on AI Enthusiasm

Asian stock markets advanced on Thursday, May 14, driven by investor enthusiasm for artificial intelligence (AI) and anticipation surrounding a summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and China's Xi Jinping in Beijing. This surge pushed South Korea's SK Hynix close to a $1 trillion market capitalization, reflecting significant gains in the AI sector.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan increased by 1.2%, nearing a recent record high. Japan's Nikkei reached a new all-time peak, with AI-linked demand contributing to corporate earnings. South Korea's KOSPI rose 1.7%, bringing its year-to-date gains to 88%. SK Hynix, a key AI component supplier, has seen its stock climb over 200% this year, positioning it to become the second South Korean firm, after Samsung, to achieve a $1 trillion valuation.

Concurrently, the U.S. dollar strengthened following hotter-than-anticipated inflation reports, including a significant rise in U.S.

producer prices. This has led some investors to consider the possibility of a Federal Reserve rate hike in the first half of next year.

Brent crude futures remained near $105.76 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate futures were at $101.14 per barrel, maintaining elevated oil prices that contribute to inflationary concerns.

The Trump-Xi summit is expected to focus on economic agreements, trade relations, and geopolitical flashpoints such as the Iran conflict and arms sales to Taiwan.
