Armenia Election Victory for Pashinyan's Party

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has declared victory in the recent parliamentary election. Preliminary results, based on approximately one-fifth of polling stations, indicate his Civil Contract party secured around 54% of the vote.

Addressing the public in the early hours of Monday morning, Pashinyan hailed the outcome as a "historic victory." This election marks Armenia's first general election since its military defeat by Azerbaijan in 2023.

Pashinyan's Mandate and Geopolitical Stance

The election gauged public support for Pashinyan's policy direction, which includes fostering closer ties with Western nations and pursuing a peace agreement with Azerbaijan. His Civil Contract party has gradually shifted Armenia's foreign policy since gaining power in 2018.

If confirmed by official results, this strong showing would empower Pashinyan to advance peace talks with Azerbaijan, an ongoing conflict dating back to the late 1980s. It could also facilitate efforts to normalize relations with Turkey, a key ally of Azerbaijan.

Voter Turnout and Opposition Dynamics

Voter engagement was robust, with nearly 59% of eligible voters participating in the polls across the landlocked nation of three million people. The Central Election Commission is slated to release the official preliminary voting results later on Monday.

Pashinyan's party competed against three primary pro-Russian opposition factions. The pro-Russian Strong Armenia alliance emerged as the second-largest contender, garnering approximately 21.9% of the votes in early counts. The Armenia Alliance followed with 8.7%, while the Prosperous Armenia party trailed with about 5%.

Samvel Karapetyan, founder of the Strong Armenia alliance, presented a platform emphasizing business growth and the maintenance of strong ties with Russia. His party emerged as Pashinyan's main challenger in the electoral contest.
