Apple has agreed to pay $250 million to settle a proposed U.S. class-action lawsuit that accuses the company of misleading advertising related to planned AI upgrades for Siri.
The proposed settlement was filed Tuesday in federal court in California. Plaintiffs allege Apple’s marketing, including announcements at the company’s 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference, led some consumers to buy iPhones expecting “Enhanced Siri” capabilities that were not available as advertised, including on iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 models.
Court documents also cited the Better Business Bureau’s National Advertising Division, which found that Apple’s claim that Apple Intelligence was “available now” could mislead consumers into believing an updated Siri was available at launch when it was not.
Who is covered
The settlement would apply to U.S. customers who purchased any model of an iPhone 15 or iPhone 16 between June 10, 2024, and March 29, 2025.
Potential payouts
According to the court filing, eligible claimants would receive a presumptive payment of $25 per eligible device. That amount could decrease or increase up to $95 per device depending on the total number of claims.
Apple did not admit wrongdoing as part of the settlement. The documents also state that Apple anticipates delivering additional Siri Apple Intelligence features in future sosourcesware updates at no additional cost.
The settlement still requires a judge’s approval.
If approved, it would be the second major settlement involving Siri in two years. In May 2023, Apple agreed to pay $95 million to settle a separate class-action lawsuit over privacy-related claims involving the voice assistant.
