Amanat Party Considers Uniting with New Adilet Group

Kazakhstan's ruling Amanat party has initiated a plan to merge with the recently established Adilet party, a move that aligns with President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev's ongoing efforts to reshape the nation's political landscape. This development in Central Asia's largest oil-producing state underscores a broader trend of political consolidation.

Deputies of the Amanat party, convening in Astana, publicly endorsed the proposed unification. This decision was reported by the state-owned news agency, Kazinform, indicating official backing for the initiative.

Political Restructuring Underway

The consolidation aims to foster unity rather than division, according to statements made by Amanat Chairman Yerlan Koshanov. He emphasized the necessity of combining resources with the new entity during what he described as a crucial moment for the country.

Established just last month, the Adilet party is preparing to hold its inaugural congress this Sunday. This party is reportedly led by a former senior aide to President Tokayev and draws support from influential business figures who have risen during his presidential tenure.

Tokayev's Reform Agenda

President Tokayev has been systematically implementing a series of constitutional reforms since the start of 2022. These changes followed significant civil unrest early in that year, which he characterized as an attempted coup.

His reforms include limiting the presidential term to a single seven-year period, a measure enacted via a national referendum. Tokayev secured re-election under this revised system shortly after its implementation, solidifying his mandate.

Constitutional Amendments and Future Elections

Further constitutional amendments were approved through a plebiscite earlier this year. These changes dissolved the bicameral parliament, replacing it with a single legislative chamber, and created a new vice-presidential position designed to ensure a smooth transition of power should the head of state depart early. These modifications highlight a clear intent to streamline governance and succession protocols.

Elections for the newly configured legislature are currently scheduled for August. The merger between Amanat and Adilet could significantly influence upcoming political dynamics and the composition of the new parliament, reflecting a strategic effort to consolidate political power ahead of these key elections.
