UN Reports Humanitarian Crisis in Oleshky
The United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine reported on June 25 that thousands of civilians remain trapped in the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky, facing critical shortages of food and medical care. The city, located in the Kherson region, has been under Russian control since February 2022, with conditions deteriorating significantly over the past six months.
Approximately 2,000 residents, primarily elderly, remain in the area from a pre-war population of 24,000. The region is effectively isolated by extensive landmine fields and persistent drone activity, which has rendered evacuation routes hazardous. Satellite imagery confirms multiple destroyed vehicles along paths locals describe as the road of death.
The lack of humanitarian access has left the remaining population without electricity, gas, or consistent aid. UN officials and the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry have called for an immediate local ceasefire to facilitate civilian evacuations and the delivery of essential supplies. Despite international pressure, Russia and Ukraine have yet to reach an agreement to pause hostilities, leaving the civilian population in a state of acute vulnerability.
