Tornadoes Kill Two in Illinois, Indiana

Suspected tornadoes struck Kankakee County, Illinois, and Lake Village, Indiana, on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, resulting in two fatalities and multiple injuries. The National Weather Service (NWS) reported that a supercell system spawned at least four tornadoes, causing significant damage and producing hail up to six inches in diameter, potentially a state record for Illinois. NWS survey teams are assessing the affected areas.

In Lake Village, Indiana, an elderly couple died after a tornado hit their home. Officials reported fewer than 10 serious injuries and widespread destruction, including collapsed homes, downed trees, and power lines. Approximately 70 utility poles were damaged in Newton County, leading to power outages for over 2,500 customers. Four firefighters also sustained severe damage to their homes.

In Kankakee, Illinois, seven people sustained injuries, and Mayor Christopher Curtis indicated that full power restoration would take several days. The American Red Cross established a shelter at Kankakee Community College for displaced residents. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker stated his administration is providing support for recovery efforts.
