Tornadoes Kill Two in Midwest
Tornadoes in Illinois and Northwest Indiana resulted in two deaths and significant damage, with an EF-1 tornado confirmed and further assessments underway.

Two individuals died in Lake Village, Indiana, following tornadoes that struck parts of Illinois and Northwest Indiana overnight on Tuesday. The National Weather Service (NWS) confirmed an EF-1 tornado near Wheatfield, Indiana, with peak winds reaching 110 mph. The fatalities, identified as an elderly man and woman from the same family, occurred in Lake Village, which sustained extensive damage, including to homes and the electrical system, impacting 2,500 customers.
The NWS is investigating multiple suspected tornado touchdowns in areas including Kankakee, Illinois, Aroma Park, Illinois, and Lake Village, Indiana. These events stemmed from a supercell that tracked from Pontiac, Illinois, to Wheatfield, Indiana, and continued towards Knox, Indiana. Another separate supercell produced large hailstones, with a 6-inch diameter hailstone reported in Kankakee, potentially setting a new Illinois record.
Survey crews are deployed in Kankakee County, Illinois, and Newton and Jasper counties, Indiana, to assess the full extent of the damage. Emergency services are conducting search and rescue operations, and North Newton High School in Lake Village is serving as an emergency shelter for displaced residents.
