Funding lifts DC-based Emerald AI valuation to $1.05 billion mark

Emerald AI raised $150 million at a $1.05 billion valuation to scale power-flexible data center software from Washington.

The company said the Series A was oversubscribed and co-led by Energize Capital and DCVC, with other financial and strategic investors joining the round. The financing brings Emerald AI's disclosed funding to more than $220 million, compared with the $150 million raised in this round.

Emerald AI now counts 12 Fortune Global 500 companies among its investors, the company said, though it did not identify them in the announcement. It also did not name the AI firms, data center operators or electric utilities it described as customers.

Washington firm courts utilities

From its Washington base, Emerald AI is pitching data centers as grid-responsive facilities rather than fixed power users. The company describes Emerald Conductor as software that schedules AI computing tasks and onsite energy resources so a site can adjust electricity demand when grid conditions tighten.

Emerald AI said the system is designed to protect critical AI workload performance while changing a facility's draw at multi-megawatt, full data center scale. The commercial push follows five demonstrations completed around the world, a record the company cited as support for wider deployments.

Data centers strain demand forecasts

The financing comes as data centers are projected to account for nearly half of U.S. electricity demand growth through 2030, according to the International Energy Agency figure cited by the company. Grid projects can take a decade or more to build, the company said, compared with the shorter deployment cycle sought by AI developers.

Emerald AI says broad use of flexible load across AI facilities could make more than 100 gigawatts of capacity available on the existing U.S. grid. The mechanism is straightforward: if data centers reduce draw during stressed hours, utilities may be able to connect more projects without waiting for the same near-term build-out.

For communities near large computing campuses, the company's affordability claim rests on avoiding new peak-demand costs that can be spread across ratepayers. That outcome depends on whether utilities and regulators accept software-controlled demand shifts as dependable enough to count in planning and interconnection decisions.

Commercial scale sets next tests

If utilities validate the approach, flexible data centers could ease a power bottleneck that is shaping AI investment beyond the United States. Under that scenario, Emerald AI would have a clearer route to larger customer contracts, while data center operators and power companies would gain another tool for managing new load.

If grid operators treat the software as unproven, the benefit may stay limited to site-by-site pilots and selected commercial projects. That path would leave global AI expansion more exposed to power constraints, slow Emerald AI's scaling timetable and keep the wider data center sector reliant on conventional generation, transmission and storage additions.

Emerald AI said it will use the new capital to expand commercial deployments worldwide with AI companies, data center operators and electric utilities. The main open question is whether multi-megawatt performance can be repeated across more grids, markets and customer systems without weakening reliability standards.
