Euroleague Basketball SuperCup brings four clubs to UAE

Euroleague Basketball SuperCup will launch in Abu Dhabi on September 18, bringing four clubs to Etihad Arena for a two-day Yas Island tournament.

The inaugural competition is organized by the Department of Culture and Tourism, Abu Dhabi, known as DCT Abu Dhabi, and Euroleague Basketball. It will open the European club season with a compact knockout card built for television, traveling fans and a local crowd.

Four clubs, one bracket

Olympiacos Piraeus, Fenerbahce Tarfin Istanbul, Real Madrid and Dubai Basketball make up the four-team field. The lineup puts three established European names alongside a UAE club, giving the event both pedigree and a home-market hook.

The format is simple: four teams, two match days and two games on each day. The winners of the opening games advance to the SuperCup final, while the losing sides return for the third-place game.

Olympiacos Piraeus face Fenerbahce Tarfin Istanbul at 6pm on Friday, September 18. Dubai Basketball then meet Real Madrid at 9pm, the night’s second game and the local club’s first test of the weekend.

Dubai draws Real Madrid

Dubai Basketball’s assignment is the clearest local storyline. A match against Real Madrid gives the club a home-region stage against one of the sport’s best-known European teams before the new season settles into its regular rhythm.

For the UAE side, the value is measured beyond one result. If Dubai Basketball compete cleanly against Real Madrid, the club gains a reference point against a continental benchmark; if the gap is clear, the weekend still shows the level required against Europe’s deeper squads.

The second day keeps the same evening window. The third-place game is scheduled for 6pm on Saturday, September 19, followed by the inaugural SuperCup final at 9pm.

Abu Dhabi adds basketball inventory

The SuperCup extends Abu Dhabi’s basketball calendar after the emirate hosted the EuroLeague Final Four. The new event gives Etihad Arena another international property and adds a season-opening date rather than a season-ending showcase.

Saleh Mohamed Al Geziry, Director General for Tourism at DCT Abu Dhabi, said the tournament fits the emirate’s aim to attract major sports events and create fan experiences in the capital. He also linked the competition to local business activity, the visitor economy and efforts to encourage young people to follow basketball.

The mechanism is straightforward. A two-night tournament can draw visitors into hotels, restaurants and transport networks around Yas Island, while a repeatable club event gives basketball a clearer place in Abu Dhabi’s annual sports calendar.

Tickets open in two phases

Two-day ticket packages are already available through the Etihad Arena website. Single-day tickets are due to go on sale on August 31, giving fans a later option if they want only the semifinals or the final-night session.

The next test is attendance. If the SuperCup fills the arena across both nights, Abu Dhabi strengthens its case for more European club basketball; if demand is concentrated around Real Madrid or the final, organizers will have a sharper read on how to price and schedule future editions.

For the wider industry, the event shows how European basketball is using neutral-site tournaments to reach markets outside its traditional base. For Abu Dhabi, the prize is a broader sports calendar; for Dubai Basketball, it is an early measuring stick against the teams it wants to stand beside.
