General Manager Les Snead and the scouting staff identified Simpson at the Manning Passing Academy in June, noting his intelligence and fit for Head Coach Sean McVay's offensive scheme. This decision was made despite Simpson having only 15 college starts, the fourth fewest by a first-round quarterback in the past 25 years.

Rams scouts, including Director of Scouting Nicole Blake and Assistant General Manager John McKay, emphasized Simpson's ability to operate in Alabama's pro-style system and his maturity. They observed his performance in critical games, such as a November contest against Auburn, which showcased his resilience under pressure. The team valued his perseverance through challenging adversities and his learning during his time at Alabama, where he sat behind Bryce Young and Jalen Milroe.

The Rams anticipate Simpson will spend at least a year developing through practice repetitions before potentially playing in meaningful NFL games. While Stafford, 38, had an MVP season last year with 4,707 passing yards and 46 touchdowns, the selection of Simpson was driven by the organization's belief in his fit for their system rather than an immediate need for a starter. McVay has indicated Stafford retains the right to determine his playing future on a year-to-year basis.
