Ukraine hits Moscow refinery, Kapotnya ablaze

President Volodymyr Zelensky said Kyiv struck Moscow's main Kapotnya oil refinery and a logistics site on September 19-20, hitting facilities that supply much of the capital's fuel.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said 450 drones were shot down in what he described as the region's largest attack; the governor reported at least two people killed and 20 injured as fires burned at the sites.

The Kapotnya plant has capacity of about 11 million tonnes a year, roughly 220,000 barrels per day, and officials said it supplies about 40% of Moscow's fuel market and 70% of the region's petrol and aviation-gas demand.

Traders said the immediate market effect will be concentrated in refined products, especially diesel, and pointed to the mechanism that a refinery outage removes product supply while trimming crude demand.

How long any outage lasts will determine the scale of the shock; traders said a short repair would likely see the initial bid in diesel fade, while a prolonged outage or follow-up strikes on other refining and logistics assets would extend pressure across fuels and widen refining margins.

Markets will watch the diesel curve and refining margins when trading resumes, and officials' damage assessments and repair timetables due by September 24 should clarify whether the impact broadens beyond diesel.
