UK, Japan Announce Investment Deal
The United Kingdom and Japan announced an investment agreement on Sunday in London, totaling up to 18 billion pounds ($22.8 billion) from Japanese firms into the UK economy. This initiative aims to bolster UK infrastructure, financial services, and offshore wind projects, with the stated of creating numerous jobs.
Under the agreement, Japanese companies are projected to invest over 9 billion pounds in UK infrastructure and financial services, alongside an additional 9 billion pounds in the UK's offshore wind sector. This commitment follows discussions between UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. Specific Japanese firms, including Mitsubishi Estate, Mitsui Fudosan, and Nomura Real Estate, are expected to contribute to infrastructure and real estate projects over the next five years.
The deal also includes broader technological and defense cooperation. Rolls-Royce will collaborate with Japan's Atomic Energy Agency on next-generation nuclear technologies, and a separate agreement will link UK research and development expertise with Japanese manufacturing. Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) fighter jet initiative, which also involves Italy.
