Turkish Business Leader Under Probe for Offensive Comments

Istanbul’s regional prosecutor has initiated an investigation following remarks made by Rahmi Koc, the 95-year-old honorary chairman of Turkey’s prominent Koc Holding conglomerate. The probe follows a public outcry and accusations of racist and sexist implications stemming from a joke made during a public event.

Koc’s comments, captured on video and widely shared across social media, occurred during the inauguration of a new hospital in Izmir. The incident involved former Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim and quickly drew significant negative attention.

Controversial Remarks Ignite Public Debate

The footage, disseminated on Friday, showed Koc making a suggestive anecdote involving a Kurdish woman. This immediately triggered a strong backlash online, leading to the hashtag #RahmiKoçÖzürDile (Apologize Rahmi Koc) trending on the X platform across Turkey.

Critics quickly labeled the joke as both misogynistic and racist. The sentiment underscored broad public disapproval of the nature of the remarks, questioning their appropriateness from such a prominent figure.

Koc Issues Public Apology Amid Investigation

In response to the escalating criticism, Koc issued a statement on Saturday, expressing regret. “I sincerely apologize for my remarks, which were not intended to target any individual,” Koc stated, adding, “I wish to sincerely express my regret.”

Despite the apology, the prosecutor’s office confirmed the launch of a formal investigation into the matter. This development highlights the legal and social ramifications public figures face in Turkey for perceived discriminatory speech.

Political Parties Condemn Statement

The pro-Kurdish DEM Party's women's assembly vehemently condemned Koc’s comments. Pervin Buldan, a lawmaker for the party, publicly denounced the joke on X, questioning the moral integrity of the statement.

The ruling AK Party also voiced its strong disapproval. Spokesman Omer Celik emphasized that using terms like “Kurdish woman” in a derogatory fashion contradicts national values. Celik stated that such attitudes, which are offensive to both Kurdish citizens and all women, are categorically rejected.

The incident underscores the heightened sensitivity surrounding ethnic and gender-related discourse in Turkey’s public sphere.
