Oracle Reduces Global Workforce by 21,000

Oracle Corporation eliminated approximately 21,000 positions globally over the past year, reducing its total headcount to 141,000 employees as of May 31, 2026. The 13 percent workforce reduction, disclosed in the company's latest annual report, reflects a strategic pivot toward artificial intelligence infrastructure and cloud computing operations.

The restructuring process incurred $1.8 billion in severance and related costs, a significant increase from the $374 million recorded in the previous fiscal year. Oracle management indicated that the integration of AI technologies across internal operations necessitated these personnel adjustments to optimize resource allocation. The company noted that while these measures support long-term growth, the reorganization carries risks, including potential productivity losses and shortages of specialized labor in critical development sectors.

This downsizing aligns with broader industry trends, as major technology firms redirect capital toward AI data centers. Oracle is currently scaling infrastructure to support large-scale AI deployments, joining peers like Amazon and Meta in balancing massive capital expenditures on AI hardware with aggressive cost-cutting measures. The firm stated that it will continue to evaluate its workforce requirements as its cloud and AI business segments evolve.
