Synagogue Attacker Killed in Michigan

A suspect who rammed a vehicle into Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan, on Thursday afternoon, March 12, 2026, was killed by synagogue security personnel. The incident, which law enforcement initially responded to as an "active shooter situation" around 1:35 p.m., resulted in no injuries to students or staff, according to Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard. One security personnel member sustained injuries after being hit by the vehicle but is expected to recover.

Following the attack, residents within a one-mile radius of the synagogue were advised to shelter in place. Multiple agencies, including the West Bloomfield police, Oakland County Sheriff's Office, and Michigan State Police, responded to the scene. FBI personnel also arrived to assist with the investigation.

Temple Israel, identified as the largest Reform synagogue in the United States, initiated lockout protocols for all Jewish organizations in the Detroit area. Local schools, including West Bloomfield High School, West Bloomfield Middle School, Doherty Elementary School, and Bloomfield Hills Schools, entered secure mode. Authorities increased patrols at other places of worship as a precautionary measure.
