Spotify to Add AI Persona Badges on Artist Profiles

Spotify said it will start rolling out an AI Persona badge on artist profiles beginning in mid-September, aiming to clarify when an account does not represent a human performer.

The company described the update as a transparency measure after user concerns about synthetic artist identities appearing more frequently in search and recommendation results. Spotify said the badge is designed to reduce confusion for listeners who may not realise they are opening an account not tied to a human artist.

Where Spotify says the badge will appear Spotify Where Spotify says the badge will appear Spotify said profiles assessed as lacking a human Spotify said profiles assessed as lacking a human origin will display the AI Persona label in multiple areas of the service. The company said the badge will be shown on an artist’s profile banner, in search results, and next to individual track listings. Spotify said the approach is focused on an artist’s public identity rather than the methods used to create a song. It added that it already operates separate processes for disclosing AI involvement in production. Recommendation changes tied to flagged accounts Alongside the visual label, Spotify said it will adjust how identified accounts are treated inside personalised discovery. Accounts identified as AI-generated will be excluded from personalised algorithmic recommendations unless a user has actively followed the artist, the company said. Spotify presented this as a way to limit disruption to listening while preserving user choice. Under the policy, users can still listen to, engage with, and follow these accounts, but the platform will not automatically amplify them through personalisation unless listeners opt in by following. How Spotify plans to review, label, and handle appeals Spotify said it will decide which profiles require the AI Persona badge through a combination of self-disclosure and internal account reviews. The company did not provide detailed review criteria beyond the central question of whether an account represents a human performer. Spotify also said artists flagged by the platform Spotify also said artists flagged by the platform will be able to appeal the designation. The company linked the appeals option to maintaining trust as synthetic personas become more visible in search and recommendation systems.

Scale questions as AI-related disclosures rise

Spotify said its existing AI credit submission workflow receives tens of thousands of entries every day. Against that backdrop, it remains unclear from the company’s outline how quickly reviews and appeals will be processed at scale once the badge begins appearing in mid-September.

The company’s announcement sets out where labels will be displayed and how recommendations will change, but it did not specify timelines for completing account assessments or resolving appeals after the initial rollout begins.
