Sheikh Hasina Vows Return to Bangladesh Despite Death Sentence

Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced on Wednesday her intention to return to Bangladesh, two years after fleeing the country following a student-led uprising. Hasina remains under a death sentence issued in November by Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal, which convicted her of crimes against humanity related to the 2024 uprising that resulted in over 1,400 deaths. While the Bangladeshi government has formally requested her extradition from India, New Delhi has yet to act on the petition, citing ongoing legal examination.

The announcement has exacerbated domestic tensions, triggering protests in Dhaka where demonstrators burned effigies of the former leader. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s administration condemned India for hosting the event, warning that the diplomatic friction could further strain bilateral relations. Analysts suggest that while Hasina’s return could mobilize her banned Awami League party, it faces significant legal and political hurdles, as the current government maintains that accountability for past violence remains a prerequisite for any national reconciliation.
