Autonomous robot fleets are projected to become a common sight in agricultural fields by 2050, driven by the pressing challenges of climate change and water scarcity. This forecast comes from Professor Dr. Ahmet Çolak, Head of the Agricultural Machinery and Technologies Engineering Department at Ankara University's Faculty of Agriculture, who made the announcement on March 11, 2026.
The agricultural sector is undergoing a significant technological transformation. Beyond simply boosting yields, the focus is now on making production smarter, more sustainable, and resilient in the face of climate change. This shift involves integrating advanced technologies such as sensors, big data analytics, the Internet of Things (IoT), and artificial intelligence (AI)-powered systems. These innovations are moving farming towards a digital, data-driven model, where decisions are increasingly informed by data engineering and cloud computing rather than traditional farming methods.
Professor Çolak highlighted the importance of precision agriculture, which involves applying inputs like fertilizer, pesticides, and water at variable rates, precisely matching the needs of different areas within a field. Looking ahead, autonomous robots will operate not as isolated units but as interconnected fleets. They will communicate with each other via the IoT, significantly enhancing efficiency. Drones and other unmanned vehicles will also be integrated into these systems, supporting the production of safe and reliable food. Farmers will be able to manage these sophisticated systems remotely using mobile applications.
