A United States national infected with Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo arrived in Frankfurt, Germany, on Monday for specialized medical treatment. The patient, a humanitarian worker stationed in the Ituri province, was transported to a university hospital following a request from U.S. authorities citing Germany's clinical expertise and logistical proximity to the outbreak zone.
Simultaneously, the U.S. government implemented a travel restriction under Title 49, prohibiting American citizens currently in the Democratic Republic of the Congo from boarding commercial flights to the United States. This directive mandates a 21-day quarantine period in a third country before individuals are permitted to enter the U.S. The measure affects approximately two dozen citizens currently scheduled for travel.
The ongoing Ebola outbreak in the region has resulted in over 1,900 confirmed cases and 700 deaths. German health officials stated that the patient poses no risk to the general public, as the facility maintains strict isolation protocols. The U.S. State Department has committed to providing support for affected citizens during the mandatory waiting period.
