New Orleans Sheriff Indicted Post-Jailbreak Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson was indicted Wednesday on 30 counts, including malfeasance, obstruction of justice, and falsifying public records, following a state investigation into a jailbreak last year where 10 inmates escaped from a New Orleans facility. The indictment, which also includes the sheriff's chief financial officer, Bianka Brown, with 20 similar charges, alleges that Hutson's poor management contributed to the escape, despite not directly aiding the inmates.

All 10 inmates were subsequently recaptured after a monthslong search.

The investigation determined that Hutson's failure to adhere to legal requirements and implement minimal precautions directly enabled the escape. Hutson, who lost her re-election bid and is scheduled to leave office on Monday, had previously attributed the jailbreak to understaffing and significant design flaws within the Orleans Parish Justice Center. She stated in a farewell address that her office responded professionally to the incident.

Both Hutson and Brown surrendered to the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center and were released on $300,000 bond for Hutson, who was also ordered to surrender her passport and remain within the state. The Orleans Parish jail system has been under federal oversight since 2013 due to persistent issues with violence, corruption, and dysfunction, with federally appointed monitors having previously warned of inadequate staffing and lax supervision prior to the escape.
