New D.C. Cultural Hub Celebrates Local Craft and Community

A new initiative focused on local D.C. culture, dubbed "We Make D.C.," has launched on Connecticut Avenue NW, offering an immersive experience that integrates retail, art, and community engagement. This venture, spearheaded by Stacey Price, the founder of Shop Made in D.C., aims to spotlight the city's creative spirit through the year.

The space is envisioned as a multifaceted hub where residents and visitors can connect with Washington's unique identity. It departs from broader national celebrations of history, instead zeroing in on the District's distinct contributions and local narratives.

Interactive Exhibits Highlight D.C.'s Wards

Central to the "We Make D.C." experience is the "We Live Here" activation, allowing patrons to journey through Washington's eight wards. Each ward is depicted through original murals crafted by local artists, offering a visual testament to the District's diverse neighborhoods.

Visitors are also invited to engage with the city's oral history through video testimonials from Washingtonians sharing their personal stories. An innovative app facilitates online contributions, broadening accessibility for those wishing to record their D.C. experiences.

Creative Workshops and Local Artisans

The "Make It Bar" forms another interactive cornerstone of the initiative, providing opportunities for hands-on creation. Guests can design D.C.-themed souvenirs or enroll in workshops, including candle-making and DIY stationery sessions led by local craftspeople.

For those preferring ready-made items, a curated selection of goods from local artisans is available for purchase. The space further enriches its offerings with a series of community events, such as panels, live music performances, and a rotating pop-up café featuring local coffee and matcha vendors.

Community Engagement and Future Impact

Beyond its physical installations and retail offerings, "We Make D.C." plans to launch a podcast dedicated to profiling local influencers and changemakers. This extension will further amplify the voices shaping Washington's cultural and civic landscape.

The initiative is located at 1140 Connecticut Ave. NW and is slated to run through the end of the year. It represents a significant effort to foster a stronger connection to the District's rich artistic talent and community narratives.
