A severe storm, accompanied by rain and hail, killed 89 people and injured 53 others in India's most populous state, Uttar Pradesh, on Wednesday. The state disaster management and relief office reported that the adverse weather conditions also damaged 87 houses and killed 114 livestock.
The fatalities were primarily caused by falling trees and collapsing walls. Television images depicted widespread damage, including uprooted trees and billboards, with debris impacting vehicles and roadside stalls. Storms are a common occurrence in northern India between March and June, preceding the annual monsoon season.
Uttar Pradesh's chief minister has directed officials to provide immediate assistance to survivors and to distribute financial aid within 24 hours. The state government is assessing the full extent of the damage and coordinating relief efforts for affected communities.
