Fitness trackers are being utilized by individuals with chronic illnesses to manage their conditions by promoting activity pacing, a technique that balances activity and rest to prevent symptom exacerbation. This application represents a shift from the devices' original intent of encouraging increased activity.
For example, one individual with long COVID, postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), and mast cell activation syndrome, reported using fitness trackers to monitor physiological data and avoid overexertion. This strategy has reportedly reduced instances of severe symptom flare-ups, allowing for a more stable daily routine.
The practice of pacing, supported by data from these devices, helps individuals with energy-limiting conditions such as myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), POTS, and fibromyalgia, to maintain a more predictable quality of life. While not a cure, this method assists in preventing cycles of repeated crashes and worsening symptoms by providing objective data for activity management.
